The story of Iolite goes as follows: Over a thousand years ago, during a time when high-latitude regions were often overcast, the Vikings sailed across the icy polar seas to reach the distant Americas. They used Iolite’s unique properties of double refraction and dichroism, turning it into an ancient "navigation compass." The Iolite crystal, when viewed through different polarized light angles, shows varying colors. This color-changing phenomenon helped them determine the direction of the sun, serving as a "compass" for navigation. Its high-quality, beautiful hues, which resemble those of sapphires, led to it being called the "water sapphire."
