The garnet is said to have been used as a torch for lighting in the darkness aboard Noah's Ark. Even into the Middle Ages, people continued to believe the legend that "fire resides within the garnet." Crusaders in Europe would always carry a small garnet or ruby before heading into battle, as they believed that a red gemstone, resembling blood, could protect their bodies and prevent injury. Wearing it was thought to mean that the person was "blessed by the sun."
