Legend has it that Cleopatra suffered from a difficult-to-treat ailment and refused to take medicine or undergo physical treatments. Her condition worsened, and doctors were helpless. Eventually, the high priest ground malachite into a fine powder and, pretending it was a beauty treatment, mixed it with sesame oil and applied it as eyeshadow. The vibrant green eyeshadow enhanced Cleopatra's beauty. While everyone was pleased with the results, Cleopatra asked the priest to give her the base of the eyeshadow as a gift. After using it for three or four days, her condition improved, and after about ten days, she was almost completely healed and became more gentle.

Malachite, with its English name "malachite," comes from the Greek word "mallache," referring to a plant called "mallow," meaning "green," symbolizing the color of malachite. In China, malachite is named for its resemblance to peacock feathers.
