The name Kunzite comes from its discoverer, Dr. Kunz, a renowned American mineralogist. His discovery of Kunzite ended its history of being merely used for lithium extraction, preventing it from being wasted for industrial purposes. As a tribute, the gemstone was named after him and is sometimes directly translated as "Kunzite Stone."

Kunzite is often compared to Cinderella in fairy tales—initially overlooked and unappreciated upon its discovery.
