In the famous movie Titanic, the iconic "Heart of the Ocean" was actually inspired by tanzanite. Discovered in 1967 in northern Tanzania, tanzanite was introduced to the international jewelry market by Tiffany & Co. in 1969. Currently, Tanzania remains the only commercial source of this rare gemstone, which is even scarcer than diamonds. Named in honor of the newly established Republic of Tanzania at the time, tanzanite is also known as "zoisite" in some regions. Despite its relatively lower hardness, its striking blue color rivals that of sapphires, making it highly sought after. One of tanzanite’s unique characteristics is its strong natural trichroism, displaying three different hues within a single gemstone. However, yellow and brown tones can sometimes affect its primary color.
