Cinnabar, also known as Guixian, Chensha, Dansha, and Chidan, is both a traditional Chinese medicinal material and a pigment used to create a distinctive vermilion color. Its use dates back to ancient times, and during the Ming and Qing dynasties, cinnabar was exclusively reserved for the royal family, forbidden for commoners. The iconic red walls of the Forbidden City were painted with cinnabar. It is often crafted into Buddhist prayer beads, and according to legend, the red mark on the foreheads of Buddha Shakyamuni and Guanyin Bodhisattva is made of cinnabar, making it a cherished item for collectors.
